The music of Sci Fi
Jan 30th, 2012, 3:54am

The recent Volkswagon commercial featuring the dog chorus that barks to one of the Star Wars themes gave me an idea for  a new forum discussion topic: favorite sci-fi music. Some of the best motion picture soundtracks in history have accompanied sci-fi flicks. My favorite: the soundtrack from 2001: a Space Odyssey. How about yours?

(Just a side note--note, get it?--give a listen to the TV theme for the original Star Trek. Then, listen to the theme for the TV show I Love Lucy. Notice the similarity--one is a descant of the other. This becomes less surprising when you realize that the original Star Trek was a Desilu production. Now, if I could only squeeze a barbershop quartet into The Fifth Element . . .)

hehe

Whenever the high school aged boys in the house would oversleep - I would CRANK the Godzilla soundtrack version of Green Day's "Brain Stew".

After opening with some very loud chords, and Godzilla cries, the first words of the song are "I'm having trouble trying to sleep..."

They tended to stay up much too late Sunday nights, and Monday morning was always a bit rough for them.

At recent sci-fi conventions in Pittsburgh, significant focus has been on something called filk. Filk, it seems, is music and lyrics related to sci-fi and fantasy. Now this is not my cup of tea, but I'd be interested in your take on this phenomenon. I know little about it other than my experience at Pittsburgh's Confluence (neat name).

The first time I ran into filk (ouch) was a few years ago when some filky friends sent me a filk CD filled with filkish songs. The music was folk but the lyrics were clever SF and fantasy subjects. I'm not much for folk music but I was impressed by the lyrics.

Gary, you may want to go to the Ohio Valley Filk Fest in Worthington this October. As for me, I'm going to an October Fest....for the Oompah music (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

Dear Gary;
  Many long years ago, when there was a Pittsburgh Science Fiction Association (PSFA -- who actually hosted the World Con in 1960!) some of the members brought songs home from the Chicago Con. It wasn't called filk then, but it would be now. I remember one in particular:

"Science fiction is my addiction
That's what's the matter with me;
I like BEMS and all those things,
Ships that fly to Saturn's rings,
I keep feedin' on crazy readin'
Sciences fiction is the only stf for me.

You can keep your detectives
And western romance,
I'll put on my song and dance
For s-t-f and fantaseee!"

Ah, those were fun days.

And now for something completely different...
Reply #10 - May 25th, 2012, 7:22pm

Here is a news story that sounds like science fiction, but isn't. From Thursday's Post Gazette, here in Pittsburgh PA;

"...the Center for Sustainable Landscapes, which held its grand opening Wednesday, is drawing attention for qualities less obvious than its old-barn wood sising, lots of windows and a rooftop garden.
Situated on a 2.65-acre brownfield site, it represents America's largest green building at 24,350 squaqre feet that can claim net-zero energy and water usage.

It also stands as America's current best example of green-building construction.

Once fully operating, the building will be completely off the utility grid. Fifty-three employees will move into the building in June, and it opens to the public in July.

The center will capture rainwater, then process it in wetland lagoons with sewage retained in wetland pits and then processed through sand filters, allowing the water's reuse inside the building. With ultraviolet technology, processed rainwater will be distilled to 100-percent pharmaceutical grade, but be used to water Phipp's orchids. It cannot be used for drinking water.

The education, administration and research complex features a $500,000 solar-photovoltaic panel array with ground-mounted panels and others atop various Phipps buldings. The solar-photovoltaic panels will produce 124 kilowatts of electricity with additional power generated by the 5-kilowatt vertical-axis wind turbine and 14 geothermal wells.

Electrical production on the Phipps campus will equal what's used to 10 aypical american homes..."

(Note: The Phipps Conservatory, of which this new building is a part, houses a huge variety of plants on public display.)

I remember visiting the Phipps a couple of times, interesting place. Seems like a lot of money to avoid a monthly utility bill. Wonder how long till it "Pays for itself". Solar is expensive, wind is "iffy" but the geo-thermal sounds interesting. Wonder how deep they went. The burgh would be a challenge to get past all the rock and into the thermal zone. How times change.

I would imagine their heating bills are stunning. The whole place is made of glass, you may recall. Imagine keeping heat in there during a Pittsburgh winter! Well, it will be interesting to see how this works out. True, da Burg is rarely on the cutting edge of anything, at least as far as I have noticed. That was one of the things that struck me as a great departure in this info. Well, time will tell, no doubt.

How did the Firefly and Serenity soundtracks get left off of any list of incredible sci-fi music?  :o  Both are brilliant. "You can't take the sky from me..."

Counting OR disregarding the theme from the original Star Trek, just about everything Alexander Courage did for orchestration on that show was fantastic.

If I had to pick just one though, my absolute favorite piece of music ever done specifically for sci-fi would have to be the full version of the theme song for the original radio and then television show "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."
