BEST SERIES POLL AND CONTEST
Jun 02nd, 2010, 4:27am

Just for fun, I'm proposing a "field of 64" to determine the best sci-fi/fantasy/horror series of all time. Once the denizens of anotherealm identify 64 candidates, I will set up the brackets and we'll vote. I've started things off with these dozen candidates:

JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy
Isaac Asimov's Foundation series
Steven King's Dark Tower novels
Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas books
Mary Stewart's Hollow Hills Arturian romances
CE Lewis's Narnia novels
Edgar Rice Burroughs's Martian novels
Stephen Donaldsen's Thomas Covenant chronicles
Terry Brooks's Shannarah books
Lahaye and Jenkins Left Behind series
EE Doc Smith's Lensman serial
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time epic

Only two rules: sci fi/fantasy/horror only (no Conan Doyle); one author, one series (no Koontz Frankenstein series). I need 52 more, 'realmers (this should take a while). I plan to start the vote-off as soon as I get 64 or on Labor Day (whichever comes first). I think this might be fun. Let's see if you agree.

Jeez, I could fill up your list just with science fiction series, but will try and show restraint.

But I do want to toss out two, Robert Heinlein's so-called Future History and Lois McMaster Bujold's Barrayar series.

I think Bujold's series might have the most Hugo awards of any series, but that would need to be checked.

Hmm, no Conan Doyle, but what about Conan?  And Elric...

I have to admit, there aren't really that many big Horror SERIES out there - maybe the Cthulu books?

And one more for the science fiction genre, Poul Anderson and the Dominic Flandry/David Falkayn future history - this has always been one of my favorites.

Probably, it  seems  to  me that  Robert Heinlein's Future History, Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea novels and  David Eddings Belgariad  have  already  been  put  in  twice...

Anyway, here  are some  good  series  to  add  on, in my  opinion...

-Samuel R. Delany's  "Return to Nevčr˙on series" ;
-Paul  McAuley's  "Four Hundred Billion Stars" Sci- Fi series;
-Alfred Elton van Vogt's  "The  Weapon  makers"  GREAT-GREAT-GREAT  Sci- Fi  series;
-Ian  Banks'  "the Culture"  wonderful  Sci-Fi  series;
-Joe  Haldeman's  "The Foerever (peace)" series;
-Tanith  Lee's " The Wars of Vis "  interesting  series;
-Frederik Pohl's  "Heechee" very  good  series;
-Ken MacLeod's  "Fall Revolution" recent  series;

Thanks webbie. I am expert with MSWord, PowerPoint, and Visio--but I'm just a beginner with XL. The list looks better and it'll probably be easier to set up brackets using the program. Still need some more series. Got till Labor day to gather them, if ncessary. Any others?

L. E. Modesitt, Jr. - The Saga of Recluce
Piers Anthony - Incarnations of Immortality (or Xanth, but I prefer the former)
Madeleine L'Engle - Kairos (which includes the Time Quartet)
C. J. Cherryh - Finisterre universe (maybe not her best, but it's what I've read of hers so far and I liked it a lot)
Roger Zelazny - The Chronicles of Amber

The next step is to assign seedings for the brackets. The experts at anotherealm (ahem) will handle that. That means that the seedings will be arbitrary and should cause controversy, wailing, cursing, aspersions regarding our parentage, and possible death threats. I know, I know . . . sounds like fun--but the seedings will also take a while. Look back here sometime around the 4th of July for the brackets. Then, be prepared to vote for your faves. Grin
