Bang the drums slowly--A giant has passed
Jan 19th, 2010, 9:11am

Robert Parker passed away of natural causes today at 77. Parker, novelist and Edgar Award winner, single-handedly revived hard-boiled detective fiction with his iconic "Spenser" series. The world he created enrapt millions of readers in dozens of languages.

I was one of those readers. And my imitative Gavin McQue short stories were my homage to this superb craftsman. His work inspired me; his writing thrilled me; his talent humbled me.

Sleep well, great one. You've earned your rest. Lesser lights than you must now emblazen the way. The world of letters will miss you.

Gary, your endearing Gavin McQue books are a fitting tribute. Well done, friend.

The genre will be poorer without him.

The genre lives on with the likes of Gavin.

Indeed a fitting tribute.
