Title: The voting on stories
Post by phorestphyre on Feb 22nd, 2010, 10:40am

Quote:
I've received some comments complaining that our Awards voting isn't fair because all stories are listed in both categories. Which does actually make some sense. How can a story be all things at all times?

It has also been pointed out to me that science fiction stories are not represented by an award of any kind.

While we do have the Editors Choice Award, that is for the best overall story and not really aimed at any one category.

We have implemented a change in the Awards in that we will make them even if we don't have a cash prize to go with it. So while we make changes to the Awards lets do them all at once and get it over with.

With all that said, I have two questions.
1) Should we put each of the stories into individual categories?
2) Should we create a Science Fiction Award also?

Feel free to comment in this thread or send me a PM (private message) to let me know what you think about all this.

Thank you.

I thought the initial message was that no results of the contest would be known until after the contest was over. As such, if the results had remained hidden (as they were with the initial messages after completion of voting: "5 votes total" was the only message when the contest began), there wouldn't be a discussion at this juncture about the "fairness" of a contest.

I feel it is too late in the game to change the current rules of the contest. Every story has had a chance at being voted upon. Everyone knew the rules since February 8, 2010. If anything, any changes should be noted and worked on for the 2010 batch of stories.

1) When a story is first considered and the email to the author is sent, maybe ask the individual authors what category the authors think their stories would best fit into. That way you have a tentative feel before putting the stories up what award category the story would fit into.

2) Put the story titles up in the respective award categories, but don't activate the voting. Maybe a reminder box, of who is eligible so readers can refer to it throughout the year before the time of voting actually commences.

3) Every three months, remind everyone that the stories being read are being considered for an award. Sometimes people forget.

4) Are there enough pure science fiction stories accepted to consider making a separate science fiction award? If not, put those science fiction stories in with the HORROR story category, combine the two, since many of the science fiction stories also have a component of horror to it.

Hmm. One hour after this post, thirty votes are cast. Three hours later, another twenty odd. If I were a conspiracy theorist....

Not a conspiracy. Voting twice from the same IP address is locked out.
But people are finding out about the prizes and voting.

I'd like to have as many people participate as possible.
So getting the news out is a good thing from my point of view.

Webbie,

Speaking of voting, were there winners announced for...The Test?  Also, when will the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place contest winners be updated beyond last October?  I'm sure you are very busy...just thought I'd ask.

    Thank You,
