Title: TWO MINUTE REVIEWS: 2012
Post by Gary A. Markette on Dec 3rd, 2009, 6:02am

If you liked Irwin Allen movies, you'll LOVE this special-effects heavy disaster (of a) flick. If, on the other hand, you enjoy things like coherent plot, believable characters, cliche avoidance, or technical accuracy, you might have a different opinion. Based on a misinterpretation of a Mayan  legend, this end-of-the world exrtravaganza wastes the talents of John Cusack, Oliver Platt, and Woody Harrelson (among others). Predictable plot "twists," outrageous "coincidences" (one character's name is "Noah," for heaven's sake), and other Hollywood garbage splatters this turkey. Tripe includes over-the-top scenary chewing by virtually every A-lister in the cast, increasingly unbelievable escapes from various certain death scenarios, and 2nd level characters stereotypical to the point of absurdity (the bimbo girlfriend of the Russian rich guy, the Russian rich guy and his obnoxious kids, the obnoxious kids, and on and on). See this film for the special effects. They are spectacular. But expect no more than a jumped up Towering Inferno. Irwin, baby, you're back in business!

Gary and Webbie, this sounds like an interesting movie. Just one question -- what is the name of it?

Yes. I know. It really is difficult to tell. Unfortunately, the film's name is a number: 2012. By the way, Ebert loved it--a Pulitzer-winning critic! Was he bribed? threatened? blackmailed? Who knows? Two great ways to see this flick: in one of those IMAX theaters or after imbibing. Perhaps Mr. Ebert was a bit elevated while viewing.

2012 - Doomsday. Not to be confused with an earlier movie of the same name of 2012.
